North Norfolk photographer, Pierre Butikofer, has just returned with his Moroccan bucket list completed. This was a trip to Fez in Morocco but ended up being more of an adventure visiting unusual sites and events across the whole of Morocco.
During my trip across Morocco, there was the festival of Eid al Hada, honouring the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his young first-born son. It is celebrated by slaughtering a sheep in the house. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy.
Needless to say it was somewhat of an eye opener to say the least! Some of the photos captured the events in the street. Not the slaughtering of the sheep I have to add!!
The trip into the Sahara desert was most magical. the silence, the wild camels, the expanse of sand as far as the eye could seem and lack of light pollution at night.
Other sights which were amazing – the goats up in the argan trees. They are so agile and they just cannot resist the nuts. But I never knew that goats fart so much!!
The dying vats at Fez that have never changed since the middle ages in their processing of skins to make leather.
The nomads of the desert with just their family, their camels and tents.
