First cargo carried on Aylsham navigation, the river Bure, for a 100 years

First cargo carried on Aylsham navigation, the river Bure, for a 100 years and I was offered the opportunity to be present at this event with my camera.

On August 26th 1912 Broadland Norfolk was hit by a massive flood described at the time as being of “biblical proportions”. The flood came after over 6 inches of rain had fallen in under 12 hours and caused terrible flooding across the region. In Norwich there was, sadly, loss of life. On the River Bure many bridges were washed away and the Navigation which allowed trading boats to carry cargoes as far as Aylsham via 5 locks starting at Coltishall ceased to function after all the locks were washed out and never repaired.

The Norfolk wherry Albion is arriving at Coltishall and a token cargo is being carried down what remains of the Navigation from Aylsham to meet with the Albion at Coltishall by canoe.

The cargo from Aylsham is potatoes and small sacks of  barley and this is a load entirely in keeping with the Navigation’s history and original purpose. The Navigation opened in 1779 and was built to allow the Aylsham area direct access to the sea to facilitate the movement of its agricultural produce. It also allowed for building materials, consumer goods, animal feed and coal to be brought in much cheaper and with more convenience than had previously been the case.

The canoe run was organised and conducted by the Buxton and Lamas 1st Sea Scouts under Mr Graham Breeze.
